Ruby Holladay passed away on October 19, 2007 in Santa Rosa, California. She was born September 30, 1908 to Clyde and India Swain on a farm near McLouth, Kansas. Ruby was preceded in death by the love of her life, Tom Holladay, as well as her brothers and sisters. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Verna M. Petersen; grandsons, Michael D. Slobodnik (Julie) and Keith A. Slobodnik (Danielle); great granddaughter, Kristin M. Slobodnik, great grandson, Kyle M. Slobodnik, great-great grandson, Gabriel T. Capito, all of Santa Rosa; sister-in-law, Edna Swain, Tonganoxie and a host of friends and relatives.
Ruby was a member of the Stanwood Friends Church near Tonganoxie, KS since 1921. She married Tom Holladay of Oskaloosa, KS on June 30, 1936. To this union, twin daughters were born in 1940, Verna Mae and stillborn Verda Fay. Ruby and Tom lived on and worked the farm near Oskaloosa until his death in 1977, when she moved to Tonganoxie. In 1996, on her 88th birthday, she moved to Santa Rosa to be near her daughter and family. Ruby spent much of her lifetime caring for the sick and elderly, babysitting neighbor’s children and always helping on the farm. She was a great lover of music and in her time played the piano, organ and other musical instruments by ear-without any formal training. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 1, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Hardy Oak Rural Cemetery, McLouth, KS. Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie, is in charge of arrangements.
