Paola — Services for Roy “Sarge” Kaufman, 76, Tonganoxie, will be Thursday at
1 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel. Graveside services will follow in
Hillsdale Cemetery, Hillsdale.
Mr. Kaufman died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at his home.
He was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Hillsdale, the son of William Laport Kaufman and
Iona Teresa McCoy-Kaufman.
Mr. Kaufman served in the U.S. Army for 22 years with tours of duty in Austria,
Germany, Korea, Thailand and two tours in Vietnam. He attained the rank of
sergeant first class and was honorably discharged in 1972. He worked at Fickels
Furniture Store for 19 years before he fully retired.
He married Aloya Kennedy on April 5, 1958. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Mark, Gardner; a daughter, Kathy Crews; two
sisters, Coleen Lewis, Oklahoma, and Evelyn Bell, Paola; a brother, Kenneth,
Greeley; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Kaufman was preceded in death by a son, Matthew.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
The family suggests memorials to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Paola, the
Alzheimer’s Association, American Lung Foundation or Hospice of Kansas Midwest,
sent in care of the chapel, 305 N. Pearl, Paola, KS 66071.
